I was devastated to hear about Harry’s death - I can’t imagine how his family and friends must be feeling. The week Harry died happened to be my last as headteacher at Twiss Green Primary School in Culcheth. Having been there since January 1998 I have spent a lot of time looking back on my memories. I clearly remember Harry starting at Twiss Green in 2006 when I was a relatively new headteacher.
I had a real soft spot for Harry when he first came to Twiss Green. To begin with, this started when he was unable to stay awake during assembly in the afternoon. (I like to think that this was more of a reflection on how tired he was at the end of a long school day, rather than the boredom factor of my assemblies!). Sometimes I carried him out of the hall and sometimes Mrs Sanderson (Teaching Assistant in Reception Class) came and collected him.
I’m not quite sure how it started, but Harry and his best friend Cameron Johnson decided that at the end of each day, if time allowed, they would hare round the building to come and see me with something they had made especially for me. This could be a card saying ‘I love you Miss McGann’ or a picture, a Roman shield or an unrecognisable piece of junk modelling!
I remember Harry’s lovely sweet smile and of course he had gorgeous blond hair. I like to think that this devotion to me was largely down to my magnetic personality rather than the fact the boys were rewarded for their efforts (either in the form of a satsuma or one of my special choir biscuits).
Everyone currently working at Twiss Green who knew Harry (and there are still quite a few of us), were deeply shocked and want to pass on their sincere condolences.
Harry’s family are very much in our thought at this truly awful time,
